An empty sidebar does not always mean the conversations were deleted. A different account, a different workspace, an archived chat, a temporary service incident, or a loading problem can hide conversations that still exist. Do not create a new account or delete local browser data until you have checked the account and workspace.

Deleted chats cannot be restored through the normal interface. The checks below are for chats that are hidden, archived, attached to another account, or temporarily unavailable.
Check the Account and Workspace First#
Open the profile menu and confirm:
- the exact email address or sign-in provider;
- whether you used Google, Microsoft, Apple, or email and password;
- the selected personal, Business, Enterprise, or Edu workspace;
- whether the expected subscription appears;
- whether another browser or device shows the same account.
Using the same visible email with a different authentication method can lead to a different account. Apple’s Hide My Email can also attach the account to a relay address.
Search and Check Archived Chats#
- Use ChatGPT’s conversation search and enter a distinctive phrase from the missing chat.
- Open Settings > Data controls.
- Open Archived Chats.
- Restore the chat if it was archived by mistake.
- Check Projects if the conversation was created inside a Project.
Archiving preserves a conversation. Deleting removes it from the interface and schedules it for permanent deletion under OpenAI’s retention rules.
Check for a Service Incident#
Open the official status page. Look for an incident involving conversation history, the sidebar, login, or ChatGPT availability.
If an active incident exists:
- Do not delete additional chats or accounts.
- Save the URL of any conversation you can still open.
- Wait for the incident update.
- Sign out and back in only after confirming your sign-in method.
A sidebar incident can affect display without erasing the underlying conversations.
Rule Out a Browser Loading Problem#
Use a private window and sign in with the confirmed method. If the history appears there, the account data is probably intact.
Then test:
- Hard refresh ChatGPT.
- Disable browser extensions that change page content.
- Clear site data for ChatGPT only.
- Update the browser.
- Try the official mobile app or another browser.
- Turn off VPN or proxy software for one test.
Do not clear the entire browser profile unless the narrow test proves that site data is the cause.
Request a Data Export#
A data export can help confirm which conversations remain associated with a personal account.
- Open Settings > Data controls.
- Choose Export data.
- Confirm the request.
- Watch the account email or phone for the export message.
- Download the ZIP before its link expires.
- Search the exported conversation JSON files for a distinctive phrase.
OpenAI states that an export can take several days. If you cannot sign in, use the OpenAI Privacy Portal instead.
An export is evidence, not a sidebar restoration tool. Uploading exported conversations to another account does not recreate the original chat list.
If Only One Conversation Is Missing#
Check whether:
- it was created in Temporary Chat;
- it belongs to a Project;
- the URL remains in browser history;
- it was archived;
- it was shared from another account;
- the title changed after the conversation continued.
Temporary Chats do not appear in normal history. A deleted chat cannot be restored through search, export, or Support.
Contact Support With Useful Evidence#
Include:
- account email and original sign-in method;
- workspace name;
- approximate date and time of the missing chats;
- titles or distinctive phrases;
- devices and browsers tested;
- whether Archived Chats, search, status, and export were checked;
- screenshots that do not expose private conversation content.
Avoid sending passwords, authentication codes, or full payment details.
Verify the Result#
The issue is resolved when the expected account and workspace are confirmed and the conversation appears through the sidebar, search, archive, Project, direct URL, or export. If none of those sources contains it and it was deleted, treat it as unavailable and rebuild only from copies you control.
