ChatGPT memory is not the same as your conversation list. Deleting random chats may remove useful work without clearing the saved memory that caused the warning. First decide whether you want to remove a remembered preference, free saved-memory capacity, stop personalization, or delete the original conversation.

Memory features can differ by plan, region, workspace, and rollout stage. Use the settings visible in your account.
Know Which Data You Are Changing#
| Data | What it does | Where to manage it |
|---|---|---|
| Saved memory | Keeps selected details for future chats | Settings > Personalization > Memory |
| Chat history reference | Uses information from past conversations | Settings > Personalization |
| Conversation history | Stores chats in the sidebar | Chat list and Data controls |
| Files | Stores uploaded material in chats or the Library | Chat, Project, GPT, or Library |
| Custom instructions | Applies instructions you entered directly | Settings > Personalization |
Turning memory off does not necessarily delete information already saved. Deleting a conversation does not automatically remove a saved memory created from that conversation.
Clear a Memory-Full Warning#
- Open your profile menu.
- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory.
- Open the memory management or memory summary screen available to your account.
- Review the entries before deleting anything.
- Remove outdated, duplicated, or overly specific details.
- Refresh the memory summary if that option is shown.
- Start a new chat and ask ChatGPT what it remembers about you.
If automatic memory management is available, review which details are prioritized. A warning can persist briefly while the account updates, so wait and refresh before deleting more data.
Fully Remove One Sensitive or Incorrect Detail#
Deleting the saved memory alone may not remove every source that can be referenced. OpenAI’s current guidance is to remove the detail from each place where it appears.
- Delete the saved memory or correct it in the memory summary.
- Find and delete chats where you originally shared or repeated the detail.
- Remove uploaded files that contain it.
- Disconnect a connected app if that app is another source.
- Review custom instructions for the same information.
Do not assume that “Don’t mention this again” is the same as deleting the source. It can prevent unwanted references without erasing every copy.
Turn Personalization Off Without Deleting Chats#
If you want normal chat history but no cross-chat personalization:
- Open Settings > Personalization.
- Turn off the available memory and chat-history reference controls.
- Leave your conversations in place if you still need them.
- Use Temporary Chat for conversations that should not use or create memories.
Temporary Chat is useful for one-off questions. It is not a substitute for your organization’s privacy, legal, or data-handling rules.
Do Not Use Memory as Document Storage#
Memory is meant for durable preferences and useful personal context. It is not version control, a project database, or a reliable archive for long drafts.
Use a file or project system for:
- article drafts and revisions;
- source notes and citations;
- schedules and task lists;
- code and configuration;
- client records;
- long character or product specifications.
Keep the source material in a document, repository, or approved storage system. Upload or paste the relevant section when needed. This prevents old versions from becoming ambiguous memories.
If Memory Appears Wrong After You Cleared It#
Check these common causes:
- The same detail still exists in another chat or file.
- Memory was disabled, but old entries were not deleted.
- The memory summary has not refreshed yet.
- You are signed in to another account or workspace.
- Custom instructions contain the same information.
- A connected app provides the detail again.
Ask a neutral verification question such as “What do you remember about my work preferences?” Do not tell ChatGPT the answer inside the test question, because that would add the information to the current conversation.
Verify the Fix#
- Review the memory management screen.
- Start a new standard chat.
- Ask what ChatGPT remembers about the removed topic.
- Start a Temporary Chat and confirm that personalization is absent there.
- Check that the conversations you intended to keep still appear in the sidebar.
The fix is complete when the unwanted memory no longer appears in a new conversation, the desired chats remain available, and the memory warning does not return after the account refreshes.
