The most important login check is the method you used when the account was created. An account opened with Continue with Google may not accept an email-and-password attempt, even when the visible email address is the same.

Match the Error Before Changing Anything#

Use the Original Sign-In Method#

Try the methods in a private window:

  1. Continue with Google.
  2. Continue with Microsoft.
  3. Continue with Apple.
  4. Email and password.

If you used Apple Hide My Email, the account may use an @privaterelay.appleid.com address. Continue with Apple instead of entering your personal email manually.

Do not repeatedly create new accounts. OpenAI does not automatically merge separate accounts, subscriptions, histories, or workspaces.

Fix a Verification or Cloudflare Loop#

  1. Disable the VPN or proxy.
  2. Allow JavaScript and cookies for chatgpt.com, openai.com, and auth.openai.com.
  3. Temporarily disable ad blockers, privacy extensions, script blockers, and cookie managers.
  4. Use a private window.
  5. Try a clean browser profile.
  6. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.

On a work or school network, the administrator may need to allow the authentication and verification services. Test another network before asking the administrator to change a firewall rule.

Fix Missing or Expired Verification Codes#

  • Use only the newest code or link.
  • Check spam, promotions, and quarantine folders.
  • Confirm that the inbox belongs to the account being used.
  • Allow messages from OpenAI.
  • Request a new code after the previous one expires.
  • Do not request many codes in rapid succession.

If the inbox is no longer accessible, self-service recovery may not be possible. Contact Support, especially when a paid subscription must be canceled.

Rule Out the Browser#

Run the following tests in order:

  1. Hard refresh the login page.
  2. Open a private window.
  3. Try another supported browser.
  4. Clear site data for ChatGPT and OpenAI authentication.
  5. Disable extensions.
  6. Update the browser and operating system.
  7. Try another device.

If the private window works, re-enable extensions one at a time. The extension that causes the login button, provider button, or verification page to disappear is the conflict.

Check Service Status and Temporary Restrictions#

Open the official status page before resetting the account. Generic login failures can be caused by a service incident.

OpenAI also warns that repeated failed attempts can trigger a temporary restriction. Stop retrying, wait, and then make one clean attempt from a normal network without a VPN.

Account Deactivated or Suspended#

A browser fix will not restore a deactivated account. Check the email associated with the account for the reason and next steps. Contact OpenAI Support if you believe the action was incorrect.

Provide the account email, sign-in method, relevant notification, and approximate time. Do not send a password or one-time code.

Verify the Fix#

  1. Sign in with the original method.
  2. Confirm the expected account email and workspace.
  3. Confirm that the expected subscription and conversation history appear.
  4. Sign out once and repeat the same method.
  5. Save the correct sign-in method in a password manager note, without storing a one-time code.

The problem is resolved only when the correct account opens. Reaching a new empty account with the same-looking email is not a successful recovery.
