The most important login check is the method you used when the account was created. An account opened with Continue with Google may not accept an email-and-password attempt, even when the visible email address is the same.

Match the Error Before Changing Anything#
| Error or symptom | Most likely first check |
|---|---|
| Wrong authentication method | Use the original Google, Microsoft, Apple, or password method |
| User already exists | Choose Log in instead of Sign up |
| Checking your browser loop | Cookies, JavaScript, VPN, proxy, blockers, or managed network |
| Something went wrong | Service status, browser, network, and extensions |
| Verification email missing | Spam, quarantine, latest code, and correct account email |
| Suspicious login behavior | Clear site data, change network, disable VPN, and wait |
| Account deactivated | Read the notification email and contact Support |
Use the Original Sign-In Method#
Try the methods in a private window:
- Continue with Google.
- Continue with Microsoft.
- Continue with Apple.
- Email and password.
If you used Apple Hide My Email, the account may use an @privaterelay.appleid.com address. Continue with Apple instead of entering your personal email manually.
Do not repeatedly create new accounts. OpenAI does not automatically merge separate accounts, subscriptions, histories, or workspaces.
Fix a Verification or Cloudflare Loop#
- Disable the VPN or proxy.
- Allow JavaScript and cookies for
chatgpt.com,openai.com, andauth.openai.com. - Temporarily disable ad blockers, privacy extensions, script blockers, and cookie managers.
- Use a private window.
- Try a clean browser profile.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
On a work or school network, the administrator may need to allow the authentication and verification services. Test another network before asking the administrator to change a firewall rule.
Fix Missing or Expired Verification Codes#
- Use only the newest code or link.
- Check spam, promotions, and quarantine folders.
- Confirm that the inbox belongs to the account being used.
- Allow messages from OpenAI.
- Request a new code after the previous one expires.
- Do not request many codes in rapid succession.
If the inbox is no longer accessible, self-service recovery may not be possible. Contact Support, especially when a paid subscription must be canceled.
Rule Out the Browser#
Run the following tests in order:
- Hard refresh the login page.
- Open a private window.
- Try another supported browser.
- Clear site data for ChatGPT and OpenAI authentication.
- Disable extensions.
- Update the browser and operating system.
- Try another device.
If the private window works, re-enable extensions one at a time. The extension that causes the login button, provider button, or verification page to disappear is the conflict.
Check Service Status and Temporary Restrictions#
Open the official status page before resetting the account. Generic login failures can be caused by a service incident.
OpenAI also warns that repeated failed attempts can trigger a temporary restriction. Stop retrying, wait, and then make one clean attempt from a normal network without a VPN.
Account Deactivated or Suspended#
A browser fix will not restore a deactivated account. Check the email associated with the account for the reason and next steps. Contact OpenAI Support if you believe the action was incorrect.
Provide the account email, sign-in method, relevant notification, and approximate time. Do not send a password or one-time code.
Verify the Fix#
- Sign in with the original method.
- Confirm the expected account email and workspace.
- Confirm that the expected subscription and conversation history appear.
- Sign out once and repeat the same method.
- Save the correct sign-in method in a password manager note, without storing a one-time code.
The problem is resolved only when the correct account opens. Reaching a new empty account with the same-looking email is not a successful recovery.
