Gemini can reject a file because of its size, the number of files, saved Gemini activity storage, a rolling usage limit, a Workspace policy, or the amount of content the model must analyze. Read the exact message before deleting data or changing the file.

Google changes limits and plan features. Check the official pages for the current file sizes, durations, and allowances.

Fix “Delete Data to Upload File”#

Gemini’s saved activity storage is separate from Google Drive storage.

  1. Open Gemini.
  2. Open Settings and help > Activity.
  3. Review chats and Gems that contain large uploaded files.
  4. Delete only the activity you no longer need.
  5. Wait several minutes for storage to update.
  6. Retry one small file.

For a work or school account, an administrator may control activity deletion. Contact the administrator instead of changing a personal Google setting.

Fix a Rolling File Limit#

If Gemini says you reached the limit for chats with files, wait for the rolling allowance to reset. Repeatedly creating new chats does not necessarily bypass the limit.

Confirm that:

  • you are using the intended Google account;
  • the expected Google AI plan is active;
  • the file is not being submitted repeatedly;
  • another chat with many files is not still processing.

Check File Size and Format#

Use the official upload guide for current limits. Then create a controlled copy:

  1. Open the file in its normal application.
  2. Save or export a new copy.
  3. Use a short filename without unusual symbols.
  4. Remove encryption when you have permission.
  5. Split a large document by chapter or task.
  6. Remove unused spreadsheet sheets and empty formatted rows.
  7. Put only supported contents in a ZIP.

For a code folder or repository, remove build output, dependency folders, caches, secrets, and large binary files before uploading.

Fix Drive and Workspace Access#

Adding a file from Drive can require Gemini Apps activity to be enabled and Google Workspace to be connected. Work or school administrators can also disable connected apps or Gemini features.

Check:

  1. You are signed in.
  2. Keep Activity is enabled when the feature requires it.
  3. Google Workspace is connected to Gemini Apps.
  4. The file belongs to an account you can access.
  5. Your organization allows Gemini and connected apps.

Do not copy restricted company or school files into a personal account to bypass policy.

When the File Uploads but the Answer Misses Details#

The problem may be context size rather than upload transport. A model can accept a file but still miss relationships spread across a very long document.

Improve the task:

  • upload fewer files at once;
  • split the file into logical sections;
  • name the pages, sheet, table, or folder to inspect;
  • ask one question at a time;
  • request a list of sections Gemini could read;
  • verify the answer against the source.

For scanned documents, run optical character recognition in an approved tool before upload.

Rule Out Browser and Network Problems#

  1. Refresh Gemini.
  2. Try a private window.
  3. Disable extensions for one test.
  4. Turn off VPN or proxy software.
  5. Try another supported browser.
  6. Try another network or the mobile app.

If the small test file works in a private window, clear Gemini site data or isolate the conflicting extension.

Verify the Fix#

  1. Upload one small supported file.
  2. Ask Gemini to identify a known heading or cell.
  3. Upload the repaired original file.
  4. Ask one narrow question with a verifiable answer.
  5. Confirm that another file can be added without the same error.

The issue is resolved when the upload completes and Gemini can retrieve a known fact from the file. A completed upload with an unverifiable answer is not enough.
