Do not initialize, format, or run a repair command until you know where the drive appears. A missing drive letter is usually a Windows configuration problem. A drive that disconnects, clicks, or reports the wrong capacity may have a hardware problem. Those cases need different actions.

Download recovery software only from the developer or Microsoft. Do not use a download portal that repackages the installer.
Stop If the Drive May Be Failing#
Disconnect the drive and consider professional recovery when you notice any of these symptoms:
- repeated clicking, beeping, or spin-up attempts;
- the drive connects and disconnects without being touched;
- Windows freezes whenever the drive is attached;
- the capacity is shown as 0 bytes or is much smaller than expected;
- the enclosure smells hot or burnt;
- the data is irreplaceable and no backup exists.
Repeated scans can make a mechanically failing drive worse. Software cannot repair damaged heads, motors, or flash memory.
Find Which Layer Is Missing#
- Connect the drive directly to the computer.
- Try another USB port and a known-good cable.
- Avoid an unpowered hub for a desktop hard drive.
- Press
Windows + X, then open Disk Management. - Compare the capacity shown there with the label on the drive.

Assign a Missing Drive Letter#
Use this only when Disk Management shows the expected partition as healthy.
- Right-click the volume.
- Select Change Drive Letter and Paths.
- Select Add.
- Choose an unused letter.
- Open File Explorer and test one small file.
Do not assign a letter to an unfamiliar recovery, EFI, or system partition.
Test the USB Connection#
If the drive is absent or unstable:
- Shut down applications using external storage.
- Eject the drive when possible.
- Replace the data cable.
- Try a rear motherboard port on a desktop PC.
- Use the original power adapter for a powered enclosure.
- Test the drive on another computer.
- If you are technically experienced, the enclosure is not hardware-encrypted, warranty terms permit it, and the connector and power requirements are confirmed, test the drive in a known-compatible enclosure. Otherwise test another complete external enclosure or ask a recovery specialist.
A successful test with another enclosure points to the bridge board or power supply, not necessarily the disk itself.
Recover Before Formatting#
If the volume is RAW, unallocated, or Windows asks to format it, do not accept the prompt. Continue with External Hard Drive Shows as RAW: Recover Files Before Formatting instead of changing the file system here.
For a stable drive, scan it with a recovery tool and save recovered files to a different physical drive. PhotoRec is free and recovers by file signature. R-Studio can scan a damaged file system and preview supported files before purchase. TestDisk can search for lost partitions, but writing a new partition table changes the source disk. Use its listing and copy functions first.
Do not install the recovery tool on the affected drive. Do not save recovered files back to it.
Check the Drive Before Reusing It#
After the files are copied elsewhere:
- Open a sample from every important file type.
- Check several large videos or archives from beginning to end.
- Compare folder counts with a backup or previous inventory.
- Keep the original drive unchanged until the recovered copy is verified.
- Copy one noncritical test folder from the drive to another disk twice after reconnecting it.
- Replace the drive if either copy reports an error, the connection drops, or the reported capacity changes.
